Stretch Marks on your dry skin
What causes stretch marks
Stretch marks occur when the dermis or middle layer of skin is stretched beyond its normal limits. But, there is much more to it than just that. It can often occur as a result of hormonal changes such as when cortisone, a hormone produced by the adrenal gland, causes a weakening of the elastin fibers in conjunction with excessive stretching of the skin. The collagen and elastin which form the connective tissue breaks apart and forms scars that we call stretch marks. Since this happens deep in the middle layer of the skin it then gradually surfaces to the outer layer where the marks are quite visible. This can be especially problematic for sufferers of dry skin since the skin is already depleted of the moisture it needs to stay in top form. The common causes:
Growth spurts--such as what occurs in adolescents. Lack of proper nutrients. Weight gain or loss--especially of the rapid variety. Pregnancy. Hormonal changes. Certain diseases--Cushings Syndrome, Marfan Syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, etc.
In addition to the above causes some medications can also make you much more susceptible or even cause you to develop them. Here is a list of those medications:
Prednisone-- is the most widely reported medication causing stretch mark development. Depo Pervera--which is used as a birth control shot. Dianette--another birth control prescribed for women. Mometasone Furoate--a type of skin lotion. Anti-Depression prescriptions. Corticosteroid medications.
Talk to your doctor if you are on these medications and are seeing signs of stretch marks beginning to develop.
Symptoms
--indented streaks in the skin. --bright streaks that have faded to whitish or grayish in color. --pink, red, or purple streaks in skin.
These streaks commonly occur on abdomen, breasts, buttocks, thighs, and upper arms.
Cures or helps
As I have mentioned before I am a very frugal person. If I can find some help for a problem that is less expensive I'll use it. Therefore, I did some research and found a site that has some home remedies for striated skin that I thought you might be interested in.
Just click here and you are there.
Some of you may be interested in the "give me a tube, cream, or whatever to get rid of these ASAP"! You really don't want to spend time mixing something up, or even remembering that you had them 3 months from now. I understand. There are many good stretch marks creams on the market these days. Please make sure that the products are pure and that they contain elastin and collagen. Go for it!
One last thing I would like to tell you. If you are one of the unfortunate people who really can find no relief to erase or lessen your crop of striae I have a story to share with you. I read an article one time in a magazine about a woman who had to have a double mastectomy due to cancer. It was very inspiring. She had been a very athletic person so full of life. And the big thing that really got me was the picture of her. She was not a victim of breast cancer. She was standing with her surf board tuck under her arm, hair blowing in the wind, topless on the beach, with a beautiful tattoo across her chest. Yes, topless!! Sometimes you just have to stop looking at yourself as a victim or the wrapper you are wrapped up in. So what if your body isn't as it used to be. Move on. Catch a wave and ride.
