Menopause

With menopause many changes can come into our lives. A change of perspective, a slowing down (or speeding up) of our activities, a push to do those things that we have always wanted to accomplish, a change in our career, and our skin begins to become drier.

Menopause symptoms

Our skin becomes drier at menopause due to the drop in our estrogen levels. Up to now our skin has performed the way it has because estrogen stimulates the production of collagen, it regulates the production of cholesterol. Two important functions in skin health. It has also helped us to retain moisture. That's right, lower estrogen levels mean you will not retain moisture for your menopausal dry skin as well as you have in the past. Those oil producing glands become less active after menopause. Below is a list of some of the other causes of menopausal dry skin:

Medications--ask your doctor if the medications you are taking could be responsible for some of your menopause dry skin problems. Maybe there is an alternative drug he could prescribe in place of the one you are currently using that would have a better effect on your skin.

Hormone Replacement Therapy. Yes, No. Should I. This decision is totally up to you. If I had to take something for hot flashes I would look into bio-identical hormone replacement.

Allergies--Perhaps you have recently become allergic to something in your environment.

Anxiety--Yes! I've heard that it can produce skin problems. Think stress.

The bottom line is that you are going to need to make some changes (there is that word again) in order to get your skin moist and wonderful again. For other challenges related to menopausal symptoms check out Glenda Devries' Nursing Menopause website.

Solutions

Here are some suggestions:

!!!Na-PCA!!!

If you have never heard of Na-PCA before I am not surprised. I've seen very little about it as a dry skin solution listed on other dry skin sites. But let me tell you a little about it. It is the natural moisturizing product found in human skin. Na-PCA stands for sodium salt of pyrollidone carboxylic acid. Wow. No wonder they simply call it Na-PCA. Just spray it on your dry spots. It works by actually drawing moisture from your environment keeping your complexion looking dewy and fresh. Find it at your health food store or click on the ad next to this paragraph.

PLANT DERIVED BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES. See your physician or pharmacist. This has got to be better than horse urine, it is made from plant based estrogens.

INCREASE HEALTHY OILS WITHIN YOUR DIET. You will need to eat more salmon, walnuts, flax seeds, fortified eggs, sardines, soy, safflower oil, olive oil. Get creative. And, get in the kitchen. Or, make sure to pick up some omega oil in gel tabs at your health food store while you are getting your NaPCA. Especially if you have an aversion or allergy to your kitchen!

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. No whining. Just do it.

WEAR SUNSCREEN. Use about an ounce of sunscreen for exposed body parts, with UVA and UVB protection. And limit your sun exposure. This is very important.

AVOID SOAP. As much as possible, especially the scented, deodorant, or anti-bacterial type. These are too harsh. Gentle cleansers would be best.

AVOID STRESS. This is not an excuse to laziness, but a call to all those people who do too much, too often. Slow down and take some time for yourself.

EXFOLIATE GENTLY, CLEANSE MORNING AND NIGHT, AND MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE.

Hey, I'm going through menopause and I would love to let you know about the moisturizer I use. Click here. If these suggestions do not work for you see your physician or dermatologist.
