Dry Skin In and Around The Eye Area

Ever notice the skin in the eye area seems to be prone to dry skin and wrinkles? This is due to the thinness of the skin and also the reduction of oil producing glands in this area of the body. Since the secretion of oils is what keeps our skin moist and unwrinkled it is only reasonable that this is a fairly common problem in the eye area. This can lead to the development of dry skin and bags under the eyes.

Causes

In addition to the above we have other factors that contribute to this problem. We all know that the main causes of damaged skin are excessive sunlight and cigarette smoke. And we all know that aging is inevitable, but we also know that the signs of aging can be corrected through diet, supplementation, stress reduction, exercise, and little common sense. Take for instance that one sign of aging is the loss of collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin begins to breakdown as we age and therefore contributes to the signs of aging by allowing our skin to wrinkle and sag. Are you all cracked looking in the eye area? We need to combat what we can for appearances sake. After all they say the eyes are the entrance to the soul and we do want to make a good impression.

Here are some other culprits:

Lack of sleep

Squinting because of sunlight

Tugging or rubbing at the skin

Illnesses

Improper removal of eye makeup

Solutions

The number 1 thing that you could do for better skin all over is to STOP SMOKING. Smoking causes you to wrinkle your face. Over time you will be permanently creased from this repeated habit. Don't feel guilty about being addicted to cigarettes--that is not all your fault. My plea is for your health. If you can't seem to quit on your own please, please, please, see your health professional. It's not about guilt and shame. It's about your future health.

As far as sunlight goes it is imperative that you get some unprotected (without sunscreen) sunlight (about 20 minutes) each day if possible. This is your best source for Vitamin D. You do have the option of a great pair of sunglasses for when you are in the sun and I would highly recommend it. This should keep you from squinting, helping you to stave off wrinkles. I even wear my shades in the winter and overcast conditions due to my sensitivity to sunlight.

Drinking alcohol is so drying for all skin. Drink in moderation or not at all.

Get some extra sleep. Go to bed early for a change!

Find a way to relax. Give this some thought. What would give you the most relaxation. Additional exercise to blow off some steam? A hot stone massage?

Properly remove your eye makeup. Use an oil-based or moisturizing eye makeup remover. This will allow you to remove it easier without tugging at the skin and should be less drying to your delicate skin.

Be sure to get the proper nutrition and exercise.

If your dry skin around the eyes is caused from illness talk to your doctor about a solution.
