ECZEMA
Eczema is a chronic skin condition. The most common characteristics are dry, red, swollen, patchy skin that can itch relentlessly. In severe cases the affected area may even crack, ooze clear liquid, and finally become crusty. This could lead to an infection. There are many different types of this condition. You will need to take your child to the pediatrician for a diagnosis of which type your child has. Look for: -inflamed skin that burns or itches -dry skin on the face, inside elbows, behind ears, and knees -blisters that itch, burn, or ooze -scaly crusted over skin -callused skin from over itching.
CAUSES
No one really knows the cause, but most researchers believe that it is a response of the immune system to environmental or emotional stresses. This response from the immune system causes the symptoms. Research is ongoing.THIS IS A HUGE UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!! As of March 2006 there has been the discovery of a gene which causes genetic skin conditions. This gene is responsible for producing a protein called filaggrin. If there is a reduction in the production of filaggrin (or absence) the skin dries out too fast. Since filaggrin normally is the barrier which keeps water in and foreign organisms out (your first line of defense), people with a reduction in filaggrin are more sensitive to toxins and bacteria. Experts have have also linked a form of asthma that occurs in association with eczema.

Here are the usual suspects: -A family history of the skin condition -food allergies -airborne allergens -changes in temperature -alcohol containing products coming into contact with skin -fragrances -pesticides -emotional stress -chemicals, such as household cleansers and solvents
SOLUTIONS
Make or purchase
eczema clothing
that is made of 100% organic cotton or other fabric that is especially made for children with this skin condition. For food allergies it is essential to be diagnosed and to read labels of all foods coming into the home to avoid irritation of the skin. The most common allergic reactions occur with eggs, milk, soy, or peanuts. Airborne allergens include mold, pollens, dust mites, animal dander, and temperature changes. Try to keep a constant temperature, vacuum often, remove animals from around your child and the child's play space. As for chemicals, keeping your child away from pesticides and household cleansers and solvents is a really big duh! But it does need to be mentioned.
