Dog Allergies

For more specific information on ENGLISH BULLDOGS.

Dog allergies can be a real challenge for dog owners. We all dislike seeing our pets suffer in any way. A dog will normally react to allergens with skin problems and sometimes chronic ear problems. Here is a short list of some of the most common allergens:

dust and dust mites

molds

pollens and weed pollens

household cleaners and laundry products

milk and milk products

food coloring

rubber and plastic

trees and grass

wool or nylon

pesticides

for food and food additives which cause dog food allergies see my homemade dog food page.

flea bites

When these allergens are ingested, inhaled, or come in contact with your pet, the immune system goes to work producing a protein. This protein attaches itself to cells located in the skin. Which causes irritating chemicals to be released. Resulting in your dog's skin allergies.

Symptoms of Dog Allergies

Hives

itchiness in the paws, ears, abdomen, face, and rectal area

loss of hair

Easing the symptoms

1. One of the easiest ways to ease dog allergy symptoms is to remove any irritants which your dogs skin and coat may be harboring. Use dish soap to remove these oils. Simply wash your pet with it.

2. Mix some olive oil into your dogs meal. This can improve your canines skin and coat tremendously over time. I think it is always wise to start from the inside to cure skin problems in humans and dogs.

3. Provide relief through the use of an anti-histimine spray. These can be purchased at your pet store. They should be used on a small area of skin irritation not all over your dog. If it is a large area see your vet.

4. If you know what is causing the skin irritation to your pet limit exposure or eliminate entirely the cause.

5. Keep a journal of activities and what your dog eats in order to figure out what is causing your dog's allergic reaction.

6. If your pet is one who has chronic skin problems and/or allergies do not breed this dog. Save others from the same heartache you are enduring.

7. Never use pesticides around your pet. I am advertising these natural solutions on this page for that reason.

Take your pet to the vet immediately

Take your pet to the vet immediately if he shows these signs:

vomiting

loss of consciousness

seizures

breathing problems

if your dog just had a vaccination and you think it might be a reaction to it

salivation (more than normal for the breed)

If these tips do not help please see your veterinarian where they can guide you in determining what is causing the skin problems in your pet. And, likewise, if you do find something that really works well for a specific skin problem make sure to inform your veterinarian. Here's to healthy skin and beautiful coats in dogs!--Marcella
