Finding a Dermatologist

It really can be a task to look for a dermatologist. Where to start? How to find a dermatologist in my area? And when your skin isn't looking its best you really don't want to be showing it to anyone, not to mention that you are in such a vulnerable state right now. So here are some tips to help you get started.

Referrals

---Ask your physician for a referral.

---Ask other people you know if they have someone they would recommend.

His/Her Credentials

---Make sure he/she is an M.D. board certified, and trained in the treatment of skin and skin conditions.

---Does the AAD certify him/her. See link below.

---Does he/she specialize in certain skin conditions?

Questions to ask before the office visit

---Does your office accept my insurance?

---Do you have a flexible schedule (weekends or evenings)?

---Does this office have an aesthetician of staff? This could be beneficial to you because then the doctor and aesthetician could communicate better. ----An aesthetician provides services such as chemical peel, laser treatments, microdermabrasion, and facials.

For the Visit

---Make sure to voice your concerns, ask questions, etc.

---Does this person seem genuinely concerned about you?

---Does the rest of the staff seem to pull together as a team?

---Do you feel comfortable with this doctor and staff?

---Is he/she knowledgeable, have a good reputation, and have extensive training?

---Does he/she have client references?

---Does he/she offer you treatment options?

---Can he/she answer all your questions?

Go to here to check out what this person's standing is within the American Academy of Dermatologists.

Hopefully these tips will help you to choose the proper person to look after your skin. Good luck. --Marcella
