Chapped Lips

Chapped lips can be the bane of many an existence. They dry out due to a lack of any oil glands, then they start to crack. If you are a nervous type of person you may be tempted to pick off the dried up skin. Oh, Oh, now they are bleeding. Before you know it they can even become inflamed, irritated, or worse yet infected. Hardly kissable. Let's fight back.

Chronic Chapped Lips

There are many reasons why this cycle starts so let's dig in and check some of them out. Maybe next time you can stop this cycle before it starts.

Chemical exposure. Anything toxic that is put on, ingested, or inhaled into the body has a huge impact on your health.

Soaps. I'm sure you know better than to wash your mouth with soap but you really shouldn't be using bar soap on your face anyway cleansers are better.

The weather. Dry, cold, and windy conditions are the culprits here.

Allergies to your skin care products or cosmetics.

Ill fitting dentures.

Infections.

High Fevers.

Dehydration. Please drink pure water.

Drugs and other medications.

A history of skin disorders.

Smoking.

Certain diseases. Diseases such as Diabetes, Kawasaki Disease, Macrocytosis, Sjogrens Syndrome.

Deficiencies in Nutrients. Riboflavin, Vitamin A, B, C.

Allergies to certain foods.

Symptoms

Here are some of the symptoms.

Dry, cracked, or bleeding lips.

Tenderness and sensitivity on lips.

Pain when touched on lips.

Feels like your lips might split apart when you laugh or smile.

Peeling lips.

Lips are rough and red in appearance.

Sores.

You frequently lick your lips. Which you should not be doing because it will make your chapped lips worse.

Best Treatment for Chapped Lips

Since there are no oil glands in the lips they can not take care of themselves, you are going to have to give them year around protection from the elements and also from the inside. Here are some suggestions. Try some, especially the first one.

No smoking.

Some people are allergic to the coloring or other substances in their tooth gel switch to a paste (preferably an all natural one).

Try one of the following or a combination of the following:

cocoa butter, coconut oil, or olive oil.

Some people swear by Blistex Medicated Balm SPF 15.

Drink water. If you are not taking nutritional supplements start doing so.

Get out of the sun! If you have ever had sunburned lips before you probably won't have to be told again.

Wear protection on your lips everyday, but especially in times of weather extremes.

Reduce your chemical exposure. Think: Food and gardening (pesticides). What do you come into contact with when you do your laundry, work in the garage, clean your home?

See your doctor if you think that your chapped lips are caused by a worsening in your medical condition.

If you suspect your skin care products or cosmetics may be causing your problem check the label. Use the safest most organic products you can afford. This is your skin for crying out loud! Do what you can to protect it.

Burt's Bee Balm.

Aloe vera.
