Causes of Dry Skin
The causes of too dry skin are plentiful. The skin is our barrier to protect us from the many harmful toxins in our environment. It keeps us from getting infections and regulates our body temperature. Our skin has a fat layer that helps to keep us from losing too much moisture each and every day. Here are some common causes of dry skin:
Nutritional deficiencies---Especially Vitamin D deficiency.
Dry air. Hot wind can dry your skin as the moisture content is evaporated. Cold dry air can also evaporate moisture. Long Hot Showers and Baths. This is one of the major causes of dry skin. Soap that is too harsh. Itchy clothing. Medical Conditions.
Diabetes (diabetes dry skin symptom),
Cancer,
Sjogren's syndrome,
liver dysfunction (see congested liver and dry skin),
and
kidney problems.

Chlorinated water.
Hypothyroidism.
Here are some solutions: Let's start with your morning shower. Notice I wrote shower instead of bath. If you have dry skin a shower will be more beneficial because long hot baths disrupt the fat content of your skin. Your morning shower should be LUKEWARM and SHORT. Take special care in choosing your BATH SOAP as most bath soaps are way too harsh, especially the antibacterial and fragranced ones. Perhaps you can find a creamy moisturizing one that would be better for your dry scaly skin. Whatever you choose make sure that it is mild and as natural as possible. And just say no to sponges and brushes which can be much too abrasive. Next you will PAT your skin dry, not rub it dry. You just want to leave your skin as moist as possible. You will apply MOISTURIZER to your still damp skin immediately after drying. This will lock in the moisture. This is the appropriate use of moisturizer. Please use moisturizer on your hands after you wash them throughout the day. Then you will get dressed. Make sure that your CLOTHING, or at least your under garments, are loose fitting and made of natural fabrics such as SILK or COTTON. Avoid wool and any other fabric that irritates your skin no matter how great you think it looks. It's just not worth being uncomfortable all day. If the air in your home is dry buy a HUMIDIFIER to put moisture in the air again. This could also help you feel warm and cozy in the winter because higher humidity in the air can feel warmer. Also your heating could be making your skin drier. Try to find a FACIAL WATER SPRITZ to moisturize your skin during the day. I prefer
NaPCA.
Drink plenty of filtered water to stay hydrated throughout each day. Take a really good NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT to supply your skin with the nutrition it needs.
Foods for dry skin.
Poor nutrition is one of the causes of dry skin.
Add some omega 3 fatty acids and be sure to get some zinc. This and some EXERCISE will do wonders for your skin. Now, if you are heading outdoors summer or winter apply SUNSCREEN! A HAT in summer would be nice. In the winter also use GLOVES before heading outdoors. Stay bundled up to protect your skin from the dry air of winter. Please give some extra protection to your
LIPS.
They retain less moisture, so they can tend to dry out quickly. Apply a moisturizer or balm to them also. If you are taking MEDICATIONS talk to your physician about your dry skin condition. He or she may be able to prescribe something less drying to your skin. CERTAIN MEDICAL CONDITIONS also cause dry skin such as Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, Malnutrition, Aging, Eczema, and Psoriasis. See your physician. Avoid ALCOHOL and DRUGS like the plague! Alcohol is far too drying for your sensitive skin. You should never be using any drug that is not prescribed by your doctor. Duh! And at night SLEEP with moisturized HANDS and FEET in cotton gloves and socks. Treat yourself to a good nights sleep to relieve
STRESS.
Some really good laughter is great for stress relief. See my short story on the worst gumbo
