Anorexia
Cause of Anorexia
Anorexia is very destructive to the skin. Of course this is the least of your problems if you happen to have this psychological disease. It is a form of mental illness. It is not to be held against the person since mental illness is never anyone's fault. It's just an illness that needs to be treated. The sooner the treatment the better because the chances of recovery are greater if sought sooner. Anorexia nervosa sufferers are people with emotional problems who use weight and food as a way to deal with their challenges. They are often perfectionists who want to be in control. This isn't "I want to get to this weight goal". This is "I want to get to this weight and then everything in my life will be perfect". They are terrified of gaining any weight whatsoever. They are terrified of being out of control. They are completely obsessed with being thin even though they may already be thin. They exercise constantly, sometimes for hours on end. They starve themselves and suffer from malnutrition. It is imperative that they get the help they need. It is usually young girls, who have lives that seem so out of control, that suffer the most. That is not to say that others, from young men to older adults can be anorexic, but the usual cases seen are young girls who feel pressure to remain thin.
Signs of Anorexia
The effects on the skin can be very damaging. People with this problem often do not drink the proper amount of fluids and therefore are dehydrated. If their skin is pulled up and pinched it will not go back into the original shape readily. This is due to dehydration. One only has to look at pictures of the victims of the holocaust to get an idea of what dehydrated, malnourished skin looks like. Over time the collagen and elastin in the skin are compromised. They eventually deplete their stores of natural oils in the skin. This leads to further moisture loss because we need the oils our skin produces to keep moisture in. Any time we starve ourselves or dehydrate ourselves and do not give our skin the nourishment it needs our skin suffers.
Anorexia Tip Offs
If you or someone that you know is showing a number of these signs please help them get to the doctor immediately.--Thinning hair on scalp --A wrongful perception that they are fat when it is really obvious they are not. --Irregular or totally absent periods --Refusing to eat --You know that they haven't eaten today and they are saying they are not hungry. --continual exercise --Rapid weight loss --A downy covering on their skin. This is due to the body trying to keep itself warm because the fat layer has been depleted. --Insomnia --Cracked lips --Brittle hair and nails --constantly complaining of feeling cold --and, of course, dry skin This is a very serious problem and can even result in death. If you or someone you know is having problems see your physician.
