The effects of alcohol in teens

The effects of alcohol in teens can have long term problems, or result in death. I hope every teen can avoid these by simply not indulging in this type of behavior. There are consequences to every action in life. You get to choose which path you will travel down: either one that will produce positive results, or one that will produce negative results. I know that every home is not the loving, supportive one that it should be for teens to thrive, but you are becoming an adult now and it’s time to begin to take some responsibility for yourself and your own well being. Set some goals that are easily obtainable like actually doing that homework. From there move on to some harder goals that take more time to achieve. Your self esteem will soar, and you will be amazed at what you can do.

Underage Drinking

Not all teens are drinking—don’t be fooled into this kind of thinking. If the cool crowd is—don’t be cool. Alcohol use can lead to:

--Permanent brain damage

--Depression

--Poor school performance

--Behavioral problems

How cool would that be? Not.

Take the alcohol test!

Drinking and Driving

--What is the leading cause of death between the ages of 15 to 20? Fatal car crashes where alcohol is involved. Never mind Don’t Drink and Drive----Don’t Drink, Drive, and Die.

--Roughly 30% of all alcohol related driving accidents involve teens who are drinking.

--You are a relatively inexperienced driver, when you also add the fact that you are an inexperienced drinker who does not know your own limits this can make for a deadly combination behind the wheel.

--Even consuming one drink is way too much to ever drive. Get someone sober to drive you home even if you have to call a cab. Trust me, your parents would rather pay for a cab and have you safe than for you to add to your problems by drinking and driving. Yes, you will probably be in trouble for drinking in the first place, but you will be alive.

Other Consequences

--Alcohol consumption is illegal in the United States for people younger than 21 years of age. If you are from somewhere else check with someone in authority to find out what the legal age is. There is a reason that these limits are set. You are not mature enough to handle the consequences of your actions when drinking is involved. How would you like an arrest record for the rest of your life?

--You could become involved in what is termed as “high-risk” sex. Drinking can make a person less inhibited. In other words they are more likely to act in ways they normally wouldn’t if they were sober. Such as, you may have unprotected sex, become pregnant, or contract an sexually transmitted disease—that includes HIV/AIDS.

--You could become a victim of sexual assault. Drinking could cause you to be raped by a male acquaintance. Rape occurs most commonly to young women in early adulthood and late adolescence; usually on a date. Drinking increases this risk.

--What is the third leading cause of death in people between the ages of 14 and 25? Suicide. Drinking will not help your depression, problem solving skills, or your ability to handle stress. Alcohol is a depressant and will further contribute to the downward spiral of depression.

--Drinking can lead to being pressured to use other drugs. If you don’t want this pressure or don’t think you have the courage to stand against it maybe it’s time to start hanging with a different crowd. Get involved with after school activities at school or at home. What would your parents think if you cleaned your room without ever being asked? They might think you are becoming a responsible adult.

--You could also be pressured into playing drinking games or binge drinking, which could lead to alcohol poisoning. Get a backbone. People who pressure you into doing things you normally wouldn't be tempted to do are NOT your friends. Don't be their victim

CAUTION: Do not mix any kind of drug with alcohol. This could be extremely dangerous.

When you drink you could experience the following:

--Loss of coordination, poor judgment, memory loss.

--Damage to your body. Alcohol is absorbed into your blood stream and damages all organs of the body. This can lead to serious health consequences or death. With enough drinking and time your brain actually shrinks.

--Impaired self-control. This can lead to other risky behaviors such as unprotected sex or trying to drive under the influence.

--Alcohol poisoning. This happens when you drink large amounts rapidly at one time. It can lead to coma or death.

--Getting into a car with someone you know has been drinking. You put yourself at risk for sexual assault, violence, or involvement in a car crash.

--If you already are experiencing dry skin problems drinking will make this condition much worse. That is why manufacturers add alcohol to products they want to dry quickly.

You are just beginning your young life. Don't mess it up by being a drunk. Give your body and mind time to grow up. The younger you begin to drink the more likely you are to become an alcoholic and surely you don't want that for yourself. So stand up and say "No, I don't drink".
